Great post! For comparison purposes, I have 7,443 subs of which ~100 paid. I have no paywalls of any sort and no paid content, and don't really post "Subscribe now" banners either. Have been on Substack since 11th October 2021. I was, however, blogging for ~12 years before that. This is just a hobby, not my job.
Everything in life is luck, I guess, being in the nicest place at the right time.
I was fortunate enough to take the SS France to the UK in 1974 on a cheap travel deal with the return via air. It was five days of incredible luxury (except for the below-waterline tiny shared cabin) and the crew treated me with the same courtesy the rich people got. Maybe with a bit more cheer because they could see how delighted I was by everything. I still have the menus which were reproductions of antique French song manuscripts. The food was lovely, the ocean was glorious, being wrapped in blankets in a deck chair by charming guys was once-in-a-lifetime. No one was servile. But that was a long time ago, wasn't it.
I enjoyed your roundup here. I don't think you've taken a wrong step.

It's not Brunet's "job" either. Being supported by mommy while he earns barely $1000/month by "writing" isn't a job.
He would have to double his income just to get to the poverty-line for a single person in Canada.
Thanx Chris; I really appreciate mention
I haven't been here *that* long though

Uplifting inspiring piece brother. A true maverick.
Keep up the good work. I’m a tenured prof, an early subscriber, and your reporting has really broke important stories, besides Claudine Gay.
I’m with you for the duration.
X (nee twitter) revenue fascinating to see.
